Fairview Cemetery
Fairview Cemetery – is located on Williams Road and Cemetery Road just off State Route 177 about two and a half miles from Rodman village. It was also referred to as the Cooley Cemetery. In 1878 Fairview Cemetery was referred to as the principle cemetery and was a ‘beautiful tract on Lot 28, containing three acres, neatly enclosed with an iron fence and plotted into lots and drives’. A memorial chapel was built at the cemetery in August 1915 by Mrs. Eliza Cooley in memory of her husband Nelson G. Cooley who died on April 9, 1915. In 1931 a new iron gate was installed at the main entrance. The Fairview Cemetery Association was organized on August 1, 1863 with the following trustees: Elarn Cooley, Herman L. Eastman, Solomon W. Kellogg, Zelotus M. Brown, George W. Flint, Arnold C. Hughs Charles C. Vroman, Orange C. Heaton and Ora Cooley. An article in the Jefferson County Journal issue of September 24, 1901 states the following about the cemetery:
"Considerable improvement has recently been made in Fairview Cemetery, and a man is constantly employed there to beautiful and embellish the homes of the dead. There are over a hundred quite expensive and artistic monuments there among the many that stand sentinel over the dreamless sleepers, and it is a beautiful place to visit during these sunny autumn days."
Presidents of the cemetery association have included: Reuben Z. Smith 1901, Brayton L. Cooley, G.W. Bibbins 1922, Herbert D. Cole 1926, William R. Gilbert 1933, George Greenley 1950, and WZ. Brown 1952-53. Trustees in 1950 were WZ. Brown, A. Kent Bibbins, E. Ross Vroman & Merritt Brown. Sextons have included: Murray C. Porter 1901, Jacob Chrysler 1919, Harold Brown 1930.
