Cemeteries
The oldest cemetery in the town is just east of Rodman Village, and many of the original settlers are buried there. More land adjoining could not be bought, and since no burials have been made there since early times, little attention is paid to it. Another early cemetery is at Zoar (Unionville) on the Sandy Creek Valley Road, and there are el few smaller cemeteries almost lost in the tall overgrowth of weeds and brush.
Evert’s History of Jefferson Co. says, “Fairview is the principal cemetery in 1878. This is a beautiful tract on Lot 28, containing three acres, neatly enclosed with an iron fence and plotted into lots and drives. It is under the management of the Fairview Cemetery Association, organized Aucust 1, 1863, with Elam Cooley, H.L. Eastman, S.W. Kellog, Z.M. Brown, G.W. Flint, A.C. Hughs, C.C. Vroman, O.G. Heaton, and Ora Cooley, trustees.”
The present Board of Trustees of the cemetery are: Levi Worden (President), Lisa Worden (Secretary/Treasurer), Richard Kelley, Patricia Papp Thomas, Kathy Cole Sleeman, David Hutchinson, Charles Lyttle, Donald Curtis and Allen Barkley is the caretaker.
